During the middle of 2000 I decided to go and visit my long lost friend Janus, whom I have not seen for 14 years. Janus worked with me at South African Airways and emigrated to Canada in 1994. So, it took some serious convincing on my behalf to get Sandy on an aircraft heading to Calgary when the weather forecast indicated a cool -28°C in Calgary. What a stunning trip this was! Calgary is a great city, with loads to do and see. The city is an hour's drive from the Rockies. Another 30 min drive and you are at Lake Louise and Banff. Stunning ski resorts and absolute magnificent scenery. We spent a few days traveling in the snow covered mountains, had a few beers at Wayne, Alberta (one horse town wit 42 inhabitants) and sat in the open air hot springs in Banff. Two of the highlights were the ice hockey match between the "Calgary Flames" and "Edmonton Oilers". Best live entertainment I have ever experienced. Secondly, Sandy, Janus and myself went for a bobsleigh ride down the Olympic course at Calgary Olympic Park. What a adrenalin rush!! The houses with all their Xmas lights (and they really light up the houses) left an ever lasting impression of joy in my mind. Canada, the kind of place I will definitely return to in the future.... |
